Ray Charles - Georgia (1976)

Did you ever get to see Ray Charles live? I saw him a couple of times at different festivals back in the '70s. Brother Ray was an incredible performer, and he ran a super-tight band from the piano even though he was blind from the age of 7 years old. His career spanned over 50 years. His final public appearance was on April 30, 2004, at the dedication of his music studio as a historic landmark in Los Angeles

This year at PATH JAZZ NIGHT there is a double treat. The Jazz & Blues Revue will do a Tribute to Ray Charles, and special guest vocalist Eric Benet will also perform.  The show is NEXT THURSDAY NOVEMBER 3 and there are a few seats left. Tickets are $200, and all proceeds go to PATH Ventures to help build supportive housing for LA's homeless.

Ray Charles sings Georgia: There are MANY live versions of this song on YouTube, but I think this is my favorite, from Midnight Special in 1976. Check out the hairstyles! Ray breaks it down around 3:00 and then brings it home with a rousing finish. A classic performance!

Bad Guy / Speak No Evil - 30 sec clip

One of MY favorite things is the Annual Jazz & Blues Holiday Party. This group features three fabulous singers - Courtney Lemmon, Gina Saputo and Crystal Starr. We have worked together for 8+ years and I just love these women. Each is a fantastic soloist in their own right, and then the blend of the voices is heavenly. We were unable to do this last year due to COVID, but we are back in action next weekend!

On Sunday December 5 The Jazz & Blues Holiday Party returns to Feinsteins at Vitello's in Studio City CA. Tickets start at $30, doors open at 6:30 for dinner and music starts at 8:00 PM.

This show usually sells out, so get tickets now, here:

Going Baroque!

George Kahn Quartet - Going Baroque
"Third Stream Music" is a term coined by Gunther Schuller, in a lecture at Brandeis University in 1957, for a type of music which, through improvisation or written composition or both, synthesizes the essential characteristics and techniques of contemporary Western art music and other musical traditions.

From 1967-1977, Schuller served as President of the New England Conservatory where he formalized NEC’s commitment to jazz by establishing the first degree-granting jazz program at a major classical conservatory in 1969. By then there were many jazz artists experimenting with this idea, including Claude Bolling, Ran Blake, George Russell, Roger Kellaway and John Lewis and the Modern Jazz Quartet.

The third single from the upcoming George Kahn Quartet album is a tribute to the Modern Jazz Quartet. It is appropriately titled "GOING BAROQUE", but it was named way before 24 million Americans filed for unemployment. It is a 16 bar down-home lazy blues with a 16-bar fugue to kick things off. Enjoy!

Oh Happy Day!

I was thinking yesterday that there will come a time in the not too distant future that we will say, "Remember that month when there was no traffic, and the air was clear, and we were able to walk the dog and spend time and reconnect with our kids?"
Call me an cockeyed optimist, but I woke up this morning, singing this song. Here is an AMAZING virtual choir, featuring my friends Macain Treat, Crystal Starr and Courtney Lemmon (Courtney and Crystal are two of the singers in The Jazz & Blues Revue! http://jazzandbluesrevue.com)

By the way, today is the final day of my Kickstarter for the new album, DreamCatcher. If you have not pre-ordered your copy yet, today is the last day! Check it out here:

It features George on piano, with Alex Acuña on drums, Pat Kelley on guitar and David Hughes on bass. We are performing "I Feel Pretty" by Leonard Bernstein as it will be featured on the new album. Jonathan Brock and his team do a great job filming the session. I think you get a real sense of the joy and excitement we had recording that day. Watch it here, and then pledge at
